520 _aDescribes an innovative new idea where prefabricated elevated carriageways could be built above London exclusively for the use of cyclists. A 5.7 metre high expressway could run down the middle of dual carriageways supported on a single row of columns and on single lanes; this column could be placed on the edge of the pavement and the cycleway cantilevered over the road. Notes that the scheme would have to be built rapidly if it is going to be feasible as long road closures are not cost effective as the Highways Agency charges a bill calculated cost by the length of time that the road is closed. Planning permission could be a problem as it is unlikely that the routes would be allowed to run through central London.
