520 _aA study of London's recruitment and retention crisis by Tim Edmundson Planning Research shows that 13% of council jobs are vacant while nearly 20% are being carried out by temporary workers. "Recruitment and retention of planners" can be viewed at: http://www.alg.gov.uk/upload/public/attachments/29 4/RRResearchReportWEBFINAL.pdf. Falling levels of applications to undergraduate planning degrees, high housing costs, low pay, a buoyant jobs market are all cited as reasons for the crisis. Add to this poor morale and the fact that temporary staff are paid considerable more than their permanent colleagues and the future looks bleak for London planning.
