_aEnvironment Agency Press Release _v(142/2004) 15 September 2004 (2) |
||
| 520 | _a"State of the environment 2004" has been published by the Environment Agency and can be viewed at: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/regions/south ern/861884/?lang=_e. It highlights the need for the environment to form the cornerstone of planned new development in the southeast England region. Climate change is bringing increased frequency of violent storms, droughts and floods around the world and a growing population means more demand for water, stretching available resources, and more demand for energy. Stormier weather and rising sea levels are putting increased stress on flood defences. The development of a 25% increase in housing will exacerbate all of these threats to the environment. 800 000 new homes are due to be built in the southeast England and, according to the report, this could set off an environmental time-bomb. http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/news/863229?l ang=_e®ion=&projectstatus=&theme=&subject=&sear chfor=&topic=&area=&month= | ||
