520 _aThe Campaign to Protect Rural England has just published a report which claims that a lack of affordable homes is the cause of the UK's housing crisis - rather than an overall shortage of houses. "Housing the nation: meeting the need for affordable housing" points out that between 1950 and 1980 more than 100 000 affordable houses were built by social housing providers each year in England. Since 1985 the number has fallen to less than 25 000 per annum and stood at less than 14 000 in 2002. The report can be downloaded from: http://www.cpre.org.uk/news-releases/news-rel-2004 /62-04.htm.
