490 _aDEFRA News Release
_v(511/04) 9 December 2004 (3)
520 _aUnder new proposals published today by DEFRA, open burning of farm waste and on-farm dumps will be strictly controlled. The proposed new measures will bring controls for agricultural waste in to line with waste management controls for all other business sectors. Farmers will no longer be able to dispose of waste in farm dumps without a landfill permit and the open burning of plastic waste will not be allowed. The proposals will apply controls to farm waste covering its storage, transport, recovery and final disposal. Over 160 000 farmers will be contacted in December 2004 so that they can comment on the new waste rules. The consultation ends on 18 March 2005 and is available at: http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/agwaste- regs/index.htm. http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2004/041209a.htm
