520 _aRICS is updating the Professional Standard for Surveyors Acting as Expert Witnesses as part of our commitment to support high standards in surveying, including the provision of expert witness testimony and the provision of dispute resolution services. Setting high standards for surveyors providing expert witness testimony is clearly in the public interest, with a particular focus on integrity, impartiality and acting within an area of competence or expertise. This updated RICS professional standard sets out the requirements for members who provide expert evidence in civil proceedings before a wide range of tribunals. It addresses key aspects of delivering such services, including terms of engagement, managing conflicts of interest, fee arrangements, and the preparation of written reports. The standard also clarifies the distinction between the expert witness role and other roles a surveyor may undertake during proceedings. The standard has been reviewed and updated to reflect current practice. The 4th Edition was published in April 2014, and amended in February 2023. The 4th Edition was applicable to the UK, whereas this 5th Edition is of global application. Consultation opened 26 August 2025 and closes 7 October 2025
