520 _aThe current surplus of farm products will necessitate the "setting aside" of a significant area of farmland . For the UK this could be as much as 1.5m ha spread over a period of years. Forestry offers a way of making use of this area. The possibilities of forestry for uplands and lowlands are considered and the economics and alternatives of sale and leasing this set aside land reviewed. Alternative uses such as shooting coverts, mixed grazing and woodland systems are noted.
