520 _aBridsges form a major component of all transport systems and is especially true of the UK railway network. Some 50 per cent of bridge spans are masonry arches. This paper describes current developments in arch assessment techniques for which there is now a nationwide research programme to refine methods and develop computer-aided assessment tools.
