520 _aAgriculture is, and will remain, the corner-stone of the rural economy , but many farmers have either turned to, or are considering, alternative non-farming enterprises to increase income and return on capital. This article examines the factors which should be considered in making such a choice and the possibilities of income from sport, tourism , recreation , visitor enterprises, the letting of redundant farm buildings , minerals , quarrying and landfill are reviewed.
