520 _aUntil recently, part-time farming received little attention in Britain, but attitudes are changing. In 1983 MAFF calculated that about 31% of all main holdings in England and Wales were part-time farms and they occupied about one-sixth of the total agricultural area. This article reports on the findings of a survey on part-time farming carried out by Wye College and concludes tha tthis form of farming is an inevitable development and holds out the promise of certain benefits to the farmers and their families concerned and to rural communities.
