520 _aA recent development in British shopping centre design has been the speciality centre which like many other such innovations originates from North America. A major example of this kind of centre is Covent Garden in London. In this article, the author describes his visits during the CALUS tour of 1986, to five speciality centres in the USA , reporting on such aspects as the provision of food courts , leisure development , the role of the developer, the relationship between the landlords and their tenants, marketing and promotion and design.
