520 _aLivestock auctioneering is undergoing great change, with the number of auction marts declining, and the introduction of more intense competition. The article describes the factors accounting for the transformation: decline in the number of abattoirs ; transport changes; increased capital value of livestock markets tempting redevelopment, and financial aid from the EEC. New livestock centres have been devised and built incorporating spacious car parks, improved customer facilities, better standards of hygiene, good acoustics, described here with the franchising of electronic auctions, a Canadian innovation.
