520 _aThe article undertakes a definition of sick building syndrome and an exploration of its causes and ill effects, in an attempt to clarify a situation which is beset by vaguery, controversy and subjectivity. Problems of building design and maintenance are discussed, with air conditioning , artificial lighting and indoor pollution all subject to scrutiny. Areas for further research are identified and comments on future directions given.
