520 _aTo procure planning consent for a construction project, the developer is often required to undertake an environmental impact assessment (EIA). This article examines the function and legal background of these assessments and describes their operation. In wondering whether the involvement of geographical information systems could help maximise the effectiveness of EIAs, the article describes their present role, with a case study, and evaluates their further applicability. A conclusion indicates possible future trends.
