520 _aAs EC and UK legislation forces or encourages local authorities to take on more responsibility for environmental matters, this paper argues for a more radical approach by local authorities, suggesting ways, in which economic growth can be integrated with environmental aims. Advocates use of environmentally friendly firms, improvement of the working environment, investment in sustainable developments and planning policies, which encourage green spaces and use of public transport.
