520 _aThis paper describes the design and construction of a new floor within an existing telephone exchange . Appraisal of the loads already carried by the structure showed parts of the building had little reserves of strength. Consequently, it was necessary to develop a novel design and construction method. Refurbishment of part of a building without disrupting normal activities requires particular attention to the planning stage and therefore to the design solution insofar as it affects construction.
