520 _aA report of the findings of an investigation carried out by the Construction Study Unit at Brunel University, which looked at the problems encountered when refurbishing in occupied premises. The CSU conducted a series of structured interviews with 11 contractors and produced three case studies of refurbishment s by one medium-sized contractor (two in occupied premises and one in an empty building). The CSU concluded that the major problems encountered were protection, management, supervision and noise and that good liaison between contractor and occupant is the prime requirement for a successful project.
