520 _aDescribes how the shortage of small industrial premises during the late 1970s was met in part by the Government`s Small Workshops Scheme introduced in 1980. This was not totally successful; the Government`s continuing emphasis on promotion of small firms will therefore need corresponding research into their needs to be successful. An example is given of research undertaken at Manchester University where interviews were conducted with 77 small companies in the Greater Manchester region. Details are given of the findings in respect of location, floorspace, tenure preferences, rents, premises and common services. Concludes that the nature of demand for small industrial units is highly specialised and future assistance should be targeted towards providing basic modern accommodation in the middle range of the market.
