520 _aPresents the first provisional results from the National Land Use Database, the first phase of which aims to provide data on previously developed vacant and derelict land and other developed land that may be available for redevelopment. Initial estimates show that in 1998 there were 33,000 hectares of such land in England, of which just over 12,000 had planning permission for housing or were judged suitable for housing. At current densities this could accommodate over 325,000 new dwellings.
