520 _aHistorical study of a 3000 acre estate in Devon, using estate surveys of 1650, 1788, 1802 and 1855 and comparing changes with the estate today. In order to return the estate to the landscape of two hundred years ago, it would be necessary to clear-fell nearly all existing woodland, plough up a good deal of pasture, replace a few hedges, plan some orchards and provide a few fields of gorse. Contemporary conservation measures, including a shoot which encourages tree-planting, are described. Tables. Photos.
