520 _aA report by the Association for the Conservation of Energy (ACE) indicates that energy consumption by shops, offices and other commercial buildings has risen by at least 65% since 1973. Moreover, findings suggest consumption is increasing by 3.7% pa, and the energy intensity of services in this sector has worsened. Describes some of the issues and problems identified in the report. The ACE is calling for legislation to force freeholders of commercial property to conduct regular energy audits, and to bring efficiency up to acceptable standards. Table.
