520 _aExamines the development and extension of the EU's nature protection legislation which consists of two principle directives and two regulations. The article looks at the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC), which has become the main mechanism for protecting European fauna and flora and their habitats, through the EU-wide framework, Natura 2000. This network is significant as it brings together a range of EU policies and programmes to provide protection and enhancement for endangered European species and habitats. This integrated policy development show how the EC is ensuring that its policy interventions are implemented in a more effective way and achieve the impacts intended.
