520 _aGovernment has requested all local authorities to test private water supplies for levels of radioactive elements. This move follows DETR research carried out in West Devon by the British Geological Survey, which found 15% of private water sources contained too much radon, and 7% contained unsafe levels of uranium, both carcinogenic elements. DETR radiation reports including West Devon study available at: www.environment.detr.gov.uk/radioactivity/research/complete/index.htm. National Radiological Protection Board maps of radon exposure available at: www.nrpb.org.uk/Radnmap.htm.
