520 _aThe Ashton Renewal Partnership hopes to secure £170m in funding in order to promote the physical, social and economic regeneration of Ashton-under-Lyne. Despite having some of the poorest wards in England the Lancashire town does not meet the criteria for regeneration programmes and so applied to set up a Neighbourhood Renewal Area in order to tackle the poor state of its private housing stock. Preparation for the submission included neighbourhood meetings to consider training, employment, housing, environmental and business projects, which have since formed a basis for successful bids for EU, SRB and Lottery funding.
