520 _aThe Trade and Industry Secretary has said that regional GDP figures for 1999, which showed what were described as 'Unacceptably wide economic gaps between regions', have shown the need for an active regional industrial strategy. The figures show that the average annual growth was 3.8%, with the south-east having the highest growth, at 5.1%, and the north-east the lowest at 2.3%. Although GDP per head was above £10,000 for all regions for the first time there were wide discrepancies with that in London being 30% higher than the national average and that in Northern Ireland 23% lower.
