520 _aDiscusses a recent consultation paper, issued by government, suggesting the repeal of Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 s57, which it believes is no longer needed. This currently gives public bodies, or providers of public services, the privilege of preventing lease renewals if they need the property for their own purposes. Notes that there has been little response to this consultation paper, which can be viewed at: http://www.planning.detr.gov.uk/consult/lbpltas/index.htm. Sets out the provisions of s57, and the three key reasons given in the consultation paper for repealing it. Also discusses the paper's recommendation that the procedure for dealing with applications for certificates under s57, while some leases remain subject to this section, be revised in order that the tenant's point of view be given the emphasis it deserves. The deadline for responses to the consultation paper is 30 June 2001.
