520 _aThe introduction of the revised Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations has been postponed until April 2002 because of conflict over who should compile the asbestos register. A compromise was eventually reached making it the shared responsibility of the occupier, owner and managing agent. Considers the task of preparing asbestos registers for around three-quarters of all commercial buildings, and highlights the key role surveyors will play in advising clients. Emphasises the importance of training chartered surveyors in asbestos recognition, and looks at the type of survey required which comprises a visual inspection, sample analysis, and a final assessment. Concludes that the demand on surveyors will be significant, even with the HSE decision to exclude glass and wood from the survey.
