520 _aThe first in a series of articles that looks at the national spatial planning frameworks in the UK. Among the reasons why the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) initiated a review of the linking up - the spatial dimension - of national planning are the effects of devolution, and the developing interest of the EU in spatial frameworks. Discusses the challenges posed by devolution and regionalism to national planning frameworks. Moves on to describe the study carried out by the RTPI's NSPF Steering Group. This began by commissioning six studies of: households and housing, land-use and transport, economy and employment, environment and energy, social exclusion and statutory planning systems. Describes the key recommendations to emerge from the study's findings.
