520 _aReport on the coffee shop sector where the smaller chains are struggling to compete with the market leaders, Starbucks and Costa, dominating the high street. The first signs of consolidation are appearing with negotiations between Madisons and Starbucks for the sale of Madisons' central London outlets and with even larger mid-market chains, such as Coffee Republic, admitting to finding it impossible to compete with the market leaders. Evidence points to only Starbucks and Costa being able to afford premium rents but that smaller chains may be able to flourish locally rather than in London.
