520 _aSince 1974, the Countryside Commission has spent about £10 million on some 30,000 amenity tree planting schemes . The Institute of Terrestial Ecology report on its Assessment of tree planting schemes, shows that the average rate of tree survival in these schemes was 77%. Results varied considerably from one year of planting to another and from region to region. A significant factor in survival was the degree of maintenance. Some 13% of schemes showed serious damage to trees, wind damage being the most common. D. Burdekin gives advice on tree-planting and aftercare based on latest research and useful publications are listed. 2 diagrams. 4 photos.
