520 _aMany defects , attributed to lack of control in the construction boom in the mid sixties are the aftermath of a surge of new construction technology. This article assesses changes in technology where new techniques have been used in conjunction with old with unexpected results. This includes cladding to tall buildings, new materials such as plastics giving problems not detected at the testing stage and old materials giving new problems, for example corrosion of reinforced concrete . It is important to analyse the defect and its cause be it design , workmanship , lack of maintenance , damage or old age and to monitor structures to determine the cause at an early stage.
