520 _aOutlines the problems and ways of tackling the issue of theft of the cultural property of Austria. In 2001 art thefts totalled 147 - the majority of stolen items were paintings and sculptures. The article looks at the kinds of art theft carried out; the organisations who fight against thefts and illegal excavations; the Austrian art and antiquities trade; Austrial law; international conventions; the role of museums and how the Internet plays a central role for law enforcement agencies. Concludes that the situation in Austria is managed fairly well, although there is still plenty that can be done to improve the situation.
