520 _aAn adapted Cheshire mine will be the UK's first underground storage site for hazardous waste, offering a better environmental option than most surface landfills. It will comply with the EU Landfill Directive which requires hazardous waste to be processed and disposed of in dedicated landfill sites by July 2004 but allowing some stable matter - not biodegradable nor radioactive - to be stored in specially adapted underground facilities.
