520 _aDiscusses the need to introduce new technology for surface water drainage in the form of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS). Mentions the numerous advantages of this system which include the reduction in the risk of flooding downstream of a development and the improvement of water quality. Argues that many of the possible barriers to such a development are in fact misconceptions. The most significant of these is arguably the issue of future system maintenance which may require a different mix of skills but will not necessarily increase the maintenance workload. CIRIA have developed two projects which deal with the technical and management issues of SUDS. SUDS tehcniques will provide a Technical Note targeted at designers and planners and including information and guidance on the hydraulic, structural and water quality issues.
