520 _aHighlights the importance of soil as a key environmental resource and looks at how the planning system can protect soil resources. Argues that soil often has a low profile despite its many functions. These include supporting habitats and biodiversity, acting as a carbon sink, working as a water filter and providing minerals and fuels. Emphasises the vulnerability of soils to pollution and outlines European and UK soil protection strategies. Also looks at current research led by Land Use Consultants into the role of the planning system in conserving and enhancing soils. The study is due for completion in autumn 2003 and will involve the preparation of planning guidance.
