520 _aDiscusses the need for greater slurry storage capacity on farms in the wake of the EC Nitrates Directive in order to meet the closed spreading period. Farmers are being encouraged to develop a farm waste management plan in order to organise where, when and at what rate they should spread organic manure as well as to evaluate their storage needs and spreading system. Also explains when farmers can and can't spread organic manure, the need to keep up-to-date records, storage requirements (which need to conform to the Control of Pollution (Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil) Regulations 1991 (amended 1997)) and what the Farm Waste Grant (Nitrate Vulnerable Zones) Scheme covers. A booklet is available from the Rural Development Scheme (RDS), Block 7, Government Buildings, Chalfont Drive, Nottingham NG8 3SN or t +44 (0)115 929 1191.
