520 _aDiscusses a landmark decision in which a French criminal court sentenced Adam Williams Director of Newhouse Galleries to an eight month suspended prison sentence for possession of artwork looted during the Second World War. Includes an in-depth history of the case and the Schloss Collection which the painting forms a part of. The Nanterre Tribunal Correctionnel was asked to consider firstly whether Adam Williams had acquired the painting in good faith and secondly whether he knew or should have known that the painting had been stolen during the Second World War. The court concluded that Mr Williams had not acted in good faith, found him guilty of stolen property and ordered the restitution of the painting to the Schloss heirs. Warns of the implications of the case for professional art dealers and auctioneers highlighting the importance of due care and diligence.
