520			_aPreviews the new ODPM monthly "National statistics house price index" which will be launched in September 2003. ODPM claims it will be the definitive picture of the UK housing market. The new index will include mortgaged properties bought by first-time buyers, owner-occupiers and buy-to-let investors (about 75% of all purchases), a target of at least 30 000 purchase completions (about one third of a typical month's total) and an annually calculated weighting accounting for regional variations. It will exclude cash purchased properties, re-mortgages and purchases of properties by sitting tenants. Looks at the strengths and deficiencies of the proposed new product and makes some comparisons with existing commercial and official house price indices.
