520 _aFeature on the EU directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) (Directive 02/96/EC) and its implementation into UK law. The Directive places new obligations on producers of electrical and electronic goods, in particular requiring them to finance the treatment, recovery and recycling of end products. The directive must be transposed into UK law by 13 August 2004 and the DTI has started the consultation process. Article outlines the scope of the directive, detailing the products it covers, and explains that member states must collect 4kg of WEEE per head of population by December 2006. Considers options for the collection of non-household WEEE and looks at ways to finance household WEEE treatment, differentiating between historic waste and future waste. Also looks at the IT sector and the case for a WEEE compliance scheme. Table.
