520 _aThe Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive which comes into force August 2004, is expected to create a £500m recycling bill for retailers and manufacturers of electrical products. Retailers need to implement procedures to take the products back for recycling. DTI has announced that although the directive comes in next August, retailers will be given an additional year to cope with the new laws before fines are issued. DTI has also published the results of the first consultation process online at www.dti.gov.uk.
