520 _aNew research conducted by the College of Estate Management has suggested that the conditions for private residential investment are now more favourable than at any time in the past 20 years. "Residential investment and sustainable communities" (ISBN 1904388027) examines the reasons why institutions have been reluctant to make large-scale private investments into mixed-use developments and private rented housing in the UK. The main barriers to this investment have been stock shortage, market volatility, perceived low returns and lack of tax transparency. Many of these have been eroded. The research draws in comparative information from the Netherlands and Canada, involved a comprehensive review of the UK planning and housing policy background and the legislative framework.
