520 _aGovernment is providing £3.6m to help target potholes on local roads. The money will be used to fund a new research programme to adapt the TRACS vehicle, currently used by the Highways Agency to measure road conditions on motorways and trunk roads, for use on local roads by local authorities. The TRACS vehicle allows road service data to be collected safely, efficiently and without disrupting traffic. Government aims to halt the decline in local road conditions by 2004 and to eliminate the backlog in local road maintenance by 2011.
