520 _aGovernment has provided £125m for the first of its pathfinder projects to renew the housing markets in nine areas about the country. Manchester is the first project to receive money to counter the collapsing housing market and help revitalise communities. The other areas are Birmingham and Sandwell, Merseyside, Newcastle and Gateshead, North Staffordshire, Oldham and Rochdale and South Yorkshire. A report by the Audit Commission praising the Manchester project is available online at http://www.audit-commission.gov.uk. Some of the areas have expressed concern that the money may be insufficient.
