520 _aReports on the forthcoming publication of new guidance on school design in England and Wales. Until 2001 schools were designated as crown property and exempt from the Building Regulations. Draft BB100 "Designing and managing against the risk of fire in schools", is now out to limited public consultation prior to publication. It is based upon providing a solution founded on the assessment of fire risk across a range of school building uses and provides guidance on a prescriptive basis. The need for changes has been brought about by the increased use of school buildings by user groups outside normal school hours and users. The guide aims to cut down on arson attacks in schools, which destroys irreplaceable work as well as property.
