520 _aDiscusses how PPG7 was intended to support the building of new country houses and to encourage each generation to make its own contribution to the British country house tradition. However, approximately four houses per year have been built since, and government intended to remove with the relevant paragraph altogether in order to support more affordable housing. Government was forced to relent through opposition to the omission and support for the role of the country house in rural communities and the environment. Concludes that although the new PPS7 now contains some support for the building of country houses, provided the design is groundbreaking, successful applications will increase but will not pose a serious threat to the countryside.
