520 _aExamines traditional farm and farm enterprise benchmarking and provides guidance on how to benchmark including 11 steps to effective benchmarking. Discusses partial, horizontal and vertical benchmarking in the context of increasing the use of benchmarking as a management tool and refers to the recent application of benchmarking to other aspects of farm production such as energy efficiency. Argues in conclusion that more farmers would benchmark their farm and farm enterprise performance if the likelihood of a positive payback to the costs incurred was increased and suggests several areas in which benchmarking can be expanded including an international dimension. Tables cover the 11 steps to effective benchmarking, comparisons of milk data collecting and reporting and the comparison of data collection methodology. References. Biographical notes.
