OS as the national mapping organisation makes available the definitive geographical framework for the country. Discusses OS MasterMap, the OS integrated database of 440m features represented by unique topographic identifiers and the fundamental importance of the Global Positioning System (GPS) to the OS positioning strategy. Examines the development of the Active GPS Network based on a network of permanently installed GPS receivers and OSNet, which uses Real Time Kinematic GPS solutions for direct capture of map detail and should cover all the main conurbations in Great Britain by the end of March 2005. Summarises future advancements planned for the Global Navigation Satellite Systems. Figure shows extent of OSNet network as at October 2004.
