520 _aAssesses the recently published "Independent review of the sustainability of a UK metadata service for geographically related information", jointly commissioned by the Association for Geographic Information and Ordnance Survey. Considers it to be a timely review in the context of a number of initiatives currently underway aimed at improving access to spatial data such as the European Commission backed INSPIRE proposal and the continuation of GIgateway, the national metadata service, after its current funding ceases in March 2006. The report is not a critique of GIgateway but attempts to make the case for a metadata service from first principles. It was unable to quantify the benefits of such a service using a cost-benefit analysis. Concludes that the review provides a case for extending GIgateway but a way needs to be found to secure sustainable funding.
