Gives examples of increasing public interest in urban regeneration projects such as London's Trafalgar Square, Exhibition Road and Kensington High Street improvements. Presents a case study of the regeneration of Birmingham city centre. Suggests that new ideas about trust, pedestrian freedom and responsible behaviour between different users of urban space are now being aired in refreshing ways. Concludes that the new tools and delivery vehicles of urban regeneration are resulting in levels of urban investment comparable to Victorian times and are supporting civic renewal.
