Research to date has focused on higher education's contribution to local and regional job creation, income and export earnings but attention is now being directed on the universities' role in regional development and the complex relationship between university and host city or region. University managers in a more entrepreneurial university system now have to think strategically about real estate strategy and to develop an interest in their universities' physical fabric. Higher education institutions occupy about 750 sites covering an area of around12 500 acres.
